4 Ways to Give Self-Confidence a Boost

Feeling good often comes from helping others. But sometimes you have to do good for yourself to get there. Then, the tactics to boost your own self-confidence can be carried over. And it’s time to give yourself something to smile about. In turn, others will have something to smile about, too. Below are four ways to boost your self-confidence, and ways to transfer it to others.

Point out the Positive
It hurts to hear people who only dwell on negative qualities. After all, there’s something good in people we meet, and it’s time to let them know. But not so fast. It will only lower your own self-esteem if you can’t see the good in yourself first. Start by picking qualities about yourself that you like. Then, somehow remind yourself of those qualities daily. It could be a note placed somewhere that you’ll see it or you could recite the qualities in front of the mirror.

Then, help others feel the same way. Make it a point to tell people in your life what makes them special. You can send it in a note, tell them in person or give them a call. From a text message to snail mail, the people in your life will have their spirits lifted when you remind them that they are special to you.

Get or Give a Makeover
Sometimes a change can completely alter your self-esteem. And something as simple as a haircut could have a big impact. If you have enough hair, the strands can be donated to an organization like Locks of Love, which uses the hair to make wigs for young patients who have lost hair due to various medical treatments. Their mission involves restoring “a sense of self, confidence and normalcy.”

Or, you could help give a makeover to somebody who is in need of a confidence booster. Visit your local hospital to see if there are patients in need of some pampering. You’ll be able to provide them with conversation and a time to take their mind off of the reason that they’re in the hospital.

Encourage Physical Activity
Before you write off any sort of physical activity, consider the self-confidence benefits. Physical activity releases endorphins, which make your body feel good. Plus, physical activity will tone your body and give it a healthier look. You’ve got nothing to lose.

First Lady Michelle Obama started the “Let’s Move” program to help get children to live a healthy lifestyle. From physical activity to healthy foods in the lunchroom, the First Lady recognized the importance of a healthy lifestyle for everybody. Implement a program that will get your community moving. Something as simple as a pickup game of basketball can make a difference.

Dress for Success
You’ve heard the mantra “look good, feel good.” Putting on clothes that make you feel good will help you carry yourself with a different sense of confidence. And not only can you dress yourself for success, but you can also dress others to help them succeed. Help an organization that donates clothes to those who can’t afford them. You’ll help somebody look great during an interview, and maybe even land them a job. All you have to do is provide some of your gently used dress clothes.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you.” So get out there and start improving you, and help others do the same.
